Study Guide for Night

For the following characters list everything you know about them:

Elie: He is fifteen, but he said that he is eighteen to the angel of death to keep from being killed for being too young. He had two other siblings one sister and one brother.

Chlomo:

Moshe the Beadle:
He is Elie's friend and teaches.  He teaches Elie about Kabala. He tried to warn everyone of the dangers to come, but no one listened and thought that everything was going to be alright.

Akiba Drumer: He was killed after the selection.

Madame Schachter: She screamed every night while on the train to the concentration camp that she saw a fire and a furnace.

Juliek: He played the violin in the Buna band and was upset that he was not allowed to play Beethoven because Beethoven was a German composer.

Joshef Mengele:

Idek: He was in charge of Elie's unit and was prone to crazy mood swings.   Every once in awhile he beats people for no reason, except for the fact that he was angry.

Franek: He was a foreman, smart, and tried to take Elie's gold crown.

Zalman:

Stein: He is Elie's cousin and only cared about the welfare of his immediate family. When Elie lies and says they are all right he is nice and, frequently gave Elie and his father some of his ration.

Tzipora: She is the main characters sister she is seven but is most like dead for being to young we wouldn't know or not because they got split up at the concentration camp List at least three types of conflict and briefly discuss who the conflict is between:
1)
      man vs. fate
most of the jews including Elie are questioning there fate and why any god would do this to them.
2)
m   man vs. society
Elie and the Nazi soldiers that have transferred him and almost all of his friends and family to a concentration camp/ crematory.

3)    man vs. nature
All the Jews have sleeping shacks without floors with just muddy ground. the mud on there feet can dry out along with there feet making it easy for them to bleed giving the mud an opening for infection.

Name two foreshadows:
when Madame Schachter screamed that she saw fire every night while on the train to the concentration camp. but we later learn that the concentration camp there going to has a furnace where the burn the dead and the people not fit enough to work for them.

List and explain two symbols: The soup tasted different depending on how Elie felt, like when he saw a young boy slowly being killed the soup tasted like courpses.

List and explain two ironies: When they were in the ghettos they thought they were being evacuated for there own safty, but they were realy being taken to a concentration camp where they would work for free and the weak and rebellious would be killed.

Pick out two similes:
He whispered, and tears, like drops of wax, flowed from his eyes."

Pick out two metaphors:
“Our back yard had become a real market place.”

"The stars were only sparks of the fire which devoured us. Should that fire die out one day, there would be nothing left in the sky but dead stars, dead eyes."

List at least four settings:
The small abandoned Ghetto with food still on the table, such as a pie that never got put in the oven.

The box car they arrived in, to get to the concentration camp.

The small hospital where people didn’t last long because the germans don’t care about, sick jews.

Discuss how the dynamic character changes:
When Elie enters the camp, he fears for his life but now he doesn't want death, but he wouldn't care if it ended because he has already seen the worst.
